statement
I am interested in the intimacy and sense of security or lack thereof in the bathroom. The self-exploration of solitude. I want to allow individuals the opportunity to experience my most vulnerable state. I center individuals in a private setting. The bathroom is an unquestioned excuse to take a minute for yourself; sometimes using the bathroom the only break a person willingly gives to themselves. This liminal and intimate space offers an opportunity for people to decompress even for a brief period. My work is centered around toxic and electric color palettes. With an emphasis on the perspective of tiles in the liminal spaces to make the viewer feel uneasy. I primally work in oil and acrylic paint. I use vivid, electric, and saturated colors to bring life to the banal spaces I focus on. I like to employ different types of surfaces for my paintings. I employ traditional surfaces like stretched canvas and Masonite panels. Recently, I have been creating surfaces with recycled linoleum tiles from a local church in Kutztown, Pa. There should be a strong sense of community within the individuals who choose to use the women's restroom. I believe the bathroom is an opportunity to be a setting where the patriarchy can be set aside. Mutual aid in femme spaces is powerful; we can use this public-privacy to lift each other up. Solidarity in shared spaces is important in times where individuals must prove their status as a woman.
What does it mean for the working person to gain a break from productivity?
Where does your mind go when you sit with your thoughts for three minutes while you are in the bathroom?
